I've been the GM of this damn cafe a year in December. Since i was promoted our sales are up literally 125% (quoted from my boss, each time the health department visited (4x) we made the absolute highest rating, we have a stable and happy queer staff, tons of happy locals and in general a much much much better environment. It is a HUGE improvement from what the cafe was like before. And yet, my boss is consistently telling me that my job is on the line, he refuses to pay me the almost $1000 he owes me in vacation pay, he pits the assistant managers against each other and me, he never, not once has told me of the fabulous fucking job i'm doing, and the worst of it is that I'm allowed NO mistakes. One mistake and he sees it as a reason to once again tell me that he could "demote me". The mistakes i'm talking about related to the ordering. The ordering is the BIGGEST pain in my ass. But for the most part it's fine. While i was in Mich the ordering got all fucked up. My boss is seeing this as another reason to put me down. Okay, i wasn't even here. He tried to tell me that it was from before i left, but won't show me the paperwork to prove it to me. Yes, we have run out of things before, (trash bags, bread 2x, some other stuff, some important, some not so much) it has happened, but mostly the day before the new order is supposed to come in. Overstocking is also not an option. It is however a catch 22 the way that the ordering is set up. If i MUST order 15 items minimum and only need 2, what do you think i should do? Not to mention that the GM from before worked here for 10 years and is the most anal retentive, obsessive compulsive jerk in the world. I'm not that, and i don't know how to be. I have until the end of September to be perfect. Cross your fingers for me.

It's something that you see often here. It's a way for someone to keep you under their power and to remind you that THEY are the boss. THe better you do something, the more they tend to put you down. It's part jealousy and part ego-trip for them. It is also why there is so much of a turn-over around here.

I feel for you, having been in the cafe business for 7 years, a manager for 3 I totally get it. I got fired from the last place about a week and a half ago. It's funny how these places become bubbles and all the drama occurs inside of them, except no one sees it who isn't in it. I hope things go well and that eventually yr making %125 for yrself!! :)

I can't wait to quit. It's one of the reasons why i'm going back to school. If it wasn't for the jerk boss i'd probably stay here a lot longer...i like everything else about the place (minus the stupid tourists) So, you know, i can see his assholeishness in a positive light since it's creating a situation where I HAVE to (for my sanity) get out.
